It’s only June, so months of summer still stretch ahead of you. It might be too late to book your far-flung tropical getaway or flights across the country, but it’s never too late to hop in the car and drive to a weekend escape.
Great American novels, buddy comedies and even songs have been written about road trippin’. Here are some places within driving distance of San Diego that are worth checking out, whether you’re traveling with friends, children or the whole family:
The Grand Canyon
This is a trip everyone should make at least once in their lifetime. Be sure to bring your camera and explore nearly 2 billion years of the Earth’s geological history, on display at the national park.

Big Sur
Take in the beautiful vistas at this spectacular oceanside spot. “Big Sur is an almost otherworldly beautiful nature wonderland,” proclaims San Diego Magazine. “Tucked within a forest of Redwoods, Glen Oaks Big Sur is like a summer camp for adults. The eco-chic cabins feature in-room fireplaces, heated bathroom floors, and sustainably sourced décor.”

Lake Havasu
Closer to San Diego than the other locales we’ve listed, this lake provides boating, water sports and other activities to keep the whole family entertained. Nearby desert rock formations are perfect for hiking.
