April 22 marks the international celebration of Earth Day, a holiday dedicated to the conservation and protection of our planet’s natural wonders. Started in the 1970s, people of all ages can partake in recognizing the importance of environmental consciousness in April.
“The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement,” explains the Earth Day Network, a group that organizes observances of the day. “The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed.”
If you’re interested in celebrating Earth Day but are stumped about how, here are a few suggestions to make the holiday memorable:
Take a walk. Enjoying the beauty of nature is one of the sincerest ways to celebrate this important day. Pack up your family and friends for a picnic or hike at a local park, forest or sanctuary.
Make a donation. There are plenty of organizations around the country and world whose missions are to conserve and protect the environment. Whether it’s sustaining your favorite national park or helping to end deforestation in the Amazon, do a little research. Find the nonprofit that means the most to you and make a small donation this month.
Visit your local Soapy Joe’s for a green car wash. At Soapy Joe’s, we’re committed to helping the environment through our participation in the WaterSavers program of the National Carwash Association.
