San Diego has a heartwarming holiday tradition, thanks to local radio personality, Tommy Sablan (aka “Little Tommy”).
Each year, Sablan’s “Breaking and Entering Christmas” brings holiday cheer—including food, toys, clothing and Christmas decorations—to families in need. The recipients are selected from nominations submitted by Star 94.1 listeners.
Soapy Joe’s returned as a “Breaking and Entering” sponsor for 2018, joining Sablan on air as he decked the halls of a home belonging to a San Diego family whose mother is battling cancer. Having missed Thanksgiving due to her treatment, all she wanted was for her kids to have a nice Christmas. Sablan arranged to have the family out to breakfast—completely unaware of what would be waiting for them upon their return—while he, we and other local businesses left furniture, presents and decorations inside their home. Several other families received the same surprise off the air as well.
For Soapy Joe’s, that morning kicked off the Soapy Season of Cheer. It’s our way of giving back to the communities we serve in as many ways as possible during the holiday season.
For Sablan, “Breaking and Entering Christmas” stems from his own childhood experience. KUSI News explains:
“At five years old his dad passed away and his single mom wasn’t sure how she would provide toys for her kids during the holiday season. A good Samaritan left a box of toys at their doorstep and Sablan recalls thinking his dad must have told Santa Claus to bring them those toys.”
Tommy, thank you for making the holidays brighter for so many people throughout San Diego. We’re inspired by your kindness and proud to partner in your uplifting Christmas ritual.
